Pirate's Day was originally introduced into the game back in 2008, to commemorate the International Talk Like A Pirate Day, or ITLAPD. This Holiday always lands on September 19th, as that's the official date for the real life "holiday."
The Holiday itself is very short and sweet. It only lasts 24 hours and it only has one achievement. As of 2016, there is a little bit more to do since its inception. Since there is so little to do for this Holiday, I'm also going to fill this guide with other trivial information so that it lasts longer than just a couple paragraphs.
First off, no, I'm not going to type this guide up in Pirate-ese. That's not happening. I do not celebrate this parody holiday, so I'm not going to participate, even with the written word. Now that that's out of the way...
Your one and only destination for this Holiday is quite obvious.. We're going to Booty Bay!
When you enter Booty Bay, point yourself toward the building housing the bank and land on the roof. If you don't have the ability to fly, head in to the inn and follow the multitude of staircases that lead you up to the Horde flightmaster, then to the roof above the bank. During Pirate's Day, the roof will be covered in Dread Crew who will be launching fireworks, but they are not your target. You're looking for Dread Captain DeMeza, the Scourge of the South Seas.
When you speak with DeMeza, you have the option to drink with her. Once selected, you will receive the Dread Corsair buff and be transformed into a pirate. This buff persists through death, mounting up, and while logged out, but it does not persist through shape shifting (With the recent change in how shape shifting works, this might no longer be the case, but I did not test this out with a druid.) If you lose the buff at any time, you can just talk to the commoners in any capital city for a 1 hour replacement. No need to head all the way back to Booty Bay to drink with DeMeza, but why not?
Before we get into the new stuff, we're going to do that trivial information bit I mentioned above. There are three other named NPCs nearby. Let's talk about them..
First Mate Hapana is DeMeza's first mate, as his name suggests, with his assault parrot, Nyuni. He can be interacted with, but he only shoos you away to talk to DeMeza, so he's not very social. He offers no other dialogue options or buffs. An interesting thing to note is that he apparently has a tattoo on one arm with the word "MAGATHA" in a heart. Hapana Grimtotem? A past love of Magatha Grimtotem? The world will never know...
Cap'n Slappy is the in-game representation of one of the men behind the ITLAPD, Mark Summers. The date of ITLAPD was picked so that Summers could easily remember the date, which was his ex-wife's birthday. He informs you of how he and Chumbucket created the Holiday, but DeMeza took off with it.
Ol' Chumbucket is the in-game representation of the other man behind ITLAPD, John Baur. Baur has appeared on the television show Wife Swap, as well as an episode of Jeopardy!. He tells you that today belongs to DeMeza and her crew and looking like a pirate is only half the celebration, talking like one is the other half.
-NEW- 2016 introduces an actual quest for Pirate's Day:
- You're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat!. Simply jump down into Booty Bay's.. bay.. and kill the Hungry Shark and Scavenger Shark for their Razor Shark Shark Tooth. Return the 33 teeth to DeMeza for your reward.
-NEW- Another new item available 2016 is the Slightly-Chewed Insult Book. A giant shark named Ol' Eary will spawn, roughly, every thirty minutes out by where the boat travels to Ratchet. Dread Captain DeMeza announces his arrival with a yell, "Yarrrrr! Thar be Ol' Eary, terror of the open seas! Now's our chance boys, git 'em!" The Toy itself is a reference to the Monkey Island series.
Dread Captain DeMeza is the only vendor available for this Holiday and she offers only a few things:
- Volatile Rum - 16s
- Petey - 10g
- Big Bag of Booty - 300g
- Through rough calculation, not done by me, it looks like it's a net loss of around 13g per purchase, or roughly a 4-6% loss. Credit to Jjanchan for this post. His post also goes into some speculation about exchanging gold to other servers with this item.
After finishing off that quest, taking out a giant shark, and partying down with the Dread Crew, just make sure that you don't forget to pick up the only achievement currently available for this Holiday.
The Captain's Booty: Head down to booty Bay and share a drink with Dread Captain DeMeza during the Pirate's Day celebration.
